Generic conventions in different genres

Generic conventions are used in many films and film opening to allowing the audience to identify the genre of the film.

Horror:
In a horror film you will general see death, blood, violence, a victim or victims, a villain as well as tense music and sound effects. In an opening however there will be fewer of these generic conventions will be seen. In an opening you will still get the tense music or the idea of a death or the victim villain relationship, however you very rarely see a death a weapon or blood in the film opening, this is so you keep the audience interested and it allows the audience to not get bored of the film before any actual story begins.

As you can see from this opening there are generic conventions such as pain, tense music and fast paced editing to convey the genre to the audience while still keeping them interested.

Supernatural Thriller:
In a supernatural thriller you will expect to see an element of the supernatural, for example ghosts, vampires , werewolves and so on. Also there will be conventions such as a very tense and suspenseful story line and plot twists.

As you can see from this opening there is little action seen however you are aware that it is a hybrid with a thriller due to the very tense music and strange pictures and short pieces of film you see in the background.
