G321: My Own Film Opening Analysis: Horror

The Devils Rejects

The Genre to this film is horror, we can tell this because we see the two main characters holding guns and running through a basement with people locked in cages, it is also made clear by the title 'The Devils Rejects' appears in red writing over the face of a screaming woman. The narrative of the film appears to involve two fugitives escaping from police and then to watch them on their journey to do so. There are 3 or 4 main characters seen in the opening scene, however we are unaware if any more will appear because there are no hints to any actors coming or going. The atmosphere of the opening is oddly upbeat and you find yourself siding with the fugitives as the police look very smug, the opening is upbeat because the song distracts you from the reality of the situation. The themes seem to be death and crime, we can see this because of the guns connoting death and crime as we are aware that the two characters are running from police. The film is set in souther America, we know this because of the accents we hear and the surroundings when seeing the two characters running away. The sound of the piece changes the tone of the opening credits, the song makes the entire sequence upbeat and masks the brutal reality of the narrative. The titles in the sequence  clearly stand out and the action pauses whenever the title appear. This means the audience can focus on the information they are reading rather than being distracted by the action happening around it.
