G321: My Own Film Opening Analysis: Comedy

The Hangover

Reading the title of the film before even watching the film tells us that the genre of the piece will be comedy, as a hangover can sometimes be seen as comedic subject. The narrative of the sequence is made clear by the dialogue between the man and the woman, the 4 men have lost a groom to be after a bachelor party and are left with five hours to return to the weddings, this helps towards the comedic genre as the narrative is very unrealistic. There are Five main characters we are aware of from watching the opening sequence, we know this because we see four people standing around a car while we hear one talking about the fifth. The atmosphere of the opening credits is upbeat due the the light hearted nature of the comedy, however it is also panicked because of the narrative and the dialogue between friend and the bride to be. The themes of the sequence is also panic as again it is heard in the conversation between the man and woman and it is also seen on the faces of both involved in the conversation, by doing this we can get a clear idea of what has happened as well as understand the emotions involved. The setting of the film is made clear by watching the opening credits, the scene we see the desert and Las Vegas so we know where the film is set and what to expect due to peoples preconceptions about Las Vegas. A song is used rather music, the song sounds quite slow and rather solemn, this connotes that the four/five men are in quite a lot of trouble that they will have to get out of, in five hours. The titles of the piece are not integrated and always appear in the middle of the screen in a bold font, this allows the audience to see the titles clearly and they will be easier to remember because of it.
