G321:My Own FIlm Opening Analysis: Action

The Expendables

From the opening of The Expendables you see the characters holding knifes and guns while in a army looking plane this indicates that the film is an Action film. It is difficult to determine the narrative of this film from watching this opening sequence because there is no dialogue and very few external settings are seen, however as they are in a plan you are made aware that the film will involve travel. As there is a lack of dialogue and low key lighting it creates a tense atmosphere, as the characters are always seen alone it adds to the tense atmosphere, the words saying abandon all hope are seen this intensifies the solemn, lonely and tense atmosphere we find the characters in. Themes present in the opening such as war are presented by the props used in the sequence such as weapons and army dog tags. As the characters are seen on a plane we can presume that there are multiple settings as they are seen in a mode of transport so even if we are unaware of the exact settings we know that numerous settings will be revealed in the duration of the film. The song  is mono tonal which helps promote the solemn atmosphere. The titles are not inter grated so the stand above the action, the bold font which resembles the font seen on army tags is used so the audience are made aware of the themes of the film.
