As our task is to create a film opening it is important for us to understand the key difference between and film opening and a film trailer to insure our opening fits to brief.
Film Trailer: - A montage is used to give the audience a brief outline of the plot
- Sections of the film are carefully selected to grab the attention of the audience
- The trailer will regularly fade to black or use other transitions between sections
- The trailer gives a lot of information on the film
- The title of the film is featured at the end often with a voice over and a tag line will follow
Film Opening: - The title of the film will be at the beginning of the piece with no voice over or tag line
- The credits are a lot more detailed than the ones seen in a trailer
- The characters are introduced
- There is an indication of setting, mood, genre, as well as sound and sometimes characters
- In a film opening they try to leave the audience asking question which will make them want to watch the film to find out the answers
- In the opening they will set up patterns of editing and so on which will be echoed throughout the film.
In both the trailer and the opening institution logos are seen at the start, this is because they are the most important backer of the film because without them the film wouldn't be created.
This is the trailer to '127 Hours', as you can see this shows the things you would expect to see from a trailer. There is a montage of a lot of different sections to grab the audiences attention as well as giving the audience a lot of information on the film. The title of the film is at the end and is followed by a tag line which is what you often see in a trailer.
This is the opening credits to 'Casino Royal'. In this scene the title is near the beginning and there is no tag line. The main characters are introduced, in the detailed credits. The opening also gives us indications that the film is of an action style genre; we can tell this because of the guns as well the playing card style cartoon, we will also get a hint towards the atmosphere. This opening also leaves questions which leave the audience intrigued enough to watch the rest of the film.
