In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge from and conventions of real media products?
Supernatural thrillers are a sub-genre of a thriller. They involve plot twists and cliff hangers so that the audience stay interested in the film and are guessing everything until the very end of the film.
Possession Films: possession films always involve a possession of a main character and how that character along with others fight the 'demon' or 'spirit'. Like other thriller there are a number of plot twists and cliff hangers to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and unsure of what will happen next.
Title: the title of our film 'Whispers' is similar to supernatural thriller films as most titles of this genre e.g. 'Sinister', are vague so the audience aren't 100% sure as to what the film will be about just from seeing the title.
Setting: The opening of the film is set in a house, however the majority of the film will be set in various locations such as graveyards and a number of other houses. The housing scenes would be similar to Paranormal Activity because it would be where the majority of the action
will take place.
Costume and Props: In our film opening we dressed the main character as a stereotypical teenage boy so that the audience can relate to the character. This again is similar to paranormal activity because the characters are all dressed in a stereotypical manner so the audience can relate to them and put themselves in there position.
Camerawork and Editing: Most films from the thriller genre use a combination of fast and slow paced cuts to increase the tension throughout the film. In our film opening we fast paced cuts along with different sounds to build the tension throughout the opening of the film. This is mirrored is supernatural thrillers such as The Grudge, or The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Supernatural thrillers also use a lot of hand held shots, pans and Dutch angles seen in 'Paranormal Activity'. This is so you can get points of view as well as certain things being exposed to the audience.
Title Font and Style: The font is different to most you tend to see in supernatural thrillers. Most supernatural thriller films use a less bold font at is often black and blends in with the action. However, unlike most films of this genre, we used a bold red font as we wanted the titles to clearly stand out rather than fade into the background. For example 'The Others' use a black font that fades in and out of the action so is not as bold as he font we have used.
How the opening sets up the story: The opening sets up the story by introducing us to the main character and the idea of the supernatural. This is a very common way of setting up a story as most film openings of the supernatural thriller genre always give a link to the supernatural throughout even without introduction a main character, for example 'Drag Me to Hell'
Genre, and how it is suggested: The supernatural thriller genre is suggested because the what we see the boy doing in the film opening, for example we see him pinning pictures of werewolves, and vampires e.t.c. on a map, which gives the audience an idea that there will be an element of supernatural in the film. We also portray the thriller genre by using generic conventions such as tense music and a mixture of fast and slow paced editing to build tension.
How characters are introduced: Only one character is introduced in our film opening, as he is the most important to the storyline. This breaks conventions because usually characters are introduced in very quick secession so the audience can grow familiar with the characters quickly before the story continues. However we chose to to introduce the main character alone as we wanted the audience to see the supernatural element.
Special effects: We did not user any special effects in our opening as they were not needed. Another reason is that most supernatural thrillers use special effects but not until the height of the action, and the opening are often animated or with very little action, therefore we did not challenge the conventions and did not use special effects.
