What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A production company is the main component of of creating the film. They organise the film e.g. finding the actors, organising the budget e.t.c. However if anything goes wrong it if often the Production Company that are blamed as they supply the money for the film to happen.
When a film is distributed it can be done in a number of different ways, for example a high budget, mainstream film such as Harry Potter, has a blanket release where after the première it appears in the majority of large chain cinemas all at once, often at multiple screens in each. However other films such as Rob Zombie's 'Lord of Salem' which is a film was a niche audience, it was shown at a number of film festival before being released straight to DVD in the UK in late April, and shown in very limited cinemas in the USA.
As our film is made by an independent company it is unlikely that a large distributor such as Universal would distribute our film because they tend to distribute the high budget mainstream company films such as Jurassic Park. Because Universal tend to distribute the high budget film that expect to have a high commercial success it would be unlikely that an independent film with a low budget such as ours would be distributed by a mainstream company. Our film is more likely to be distributed by a company such as Fox Searchlight. This is because they distribute independent films, such as '127 Hours' and 'The full Monty'. For this reason our film would be distributed by Fox Searchlight.

As our film is aimed for a mass teenage audience we would ideally like a large company to distribute our film, for example Universal. This is because it would be distributed to the large chain cinemas on a blanket release. However, because we are an independent company we would probably have a film festival première before there being a very slow staggered release rather than a blanket release to insure money is not wasted. Because our film is a small independent film it would be unlikely that there would be a chance of franchising and merchandising. Therefore the only way to make money back would be through the DVD. After the cinema release we would release the DVD on online stores such as Amazon and itunes, this is so the audience can still get the DVD but we would not have the put the film out in chain shops such has HMV.
